Gujarat Tech Titans from RFL Academy, the first FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) team from Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. What is FIRST?
FIRST® is widely recognised as the world’s leading youth robotics community, empowering students through project-based, mentor-guided STEM programs. The organisation operates a progression of four programs—FIRST LEGO League Discover, Explore, Challenge; FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC); and FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC)—allowing students of all ages to grow their technical and leadership abilities year after year.
A cornerstone of FIRST is its unique culture built on Gracious Professionalism® and Coopertition®, which encourages students to compete fiercely while treating all participants with respect, empathy, and fairness. Through these values, FIRST nurtures not only strong engineers but strong human beings.
FIRST teams learn real-world skills such as mechanical design, coding, CAD, electronics, strategic thinking, public speaking, outreach, fundraising, and project management. Students also collaborate with mentors from industry and academia, gaining early exposure to engineering practices and career pathways.
With global partners and events across 100+ countries, FIRST provides students with opportunities to participate in regional qualifiers, championships, and international tournaments, fostering diversity, cultural exchange, and global problem-solving. Many FIRST alumni go on to top universities and STEM careers, and the program offers millions of dollars in college scholarships annually.
Dean Kamen is an American inventor, entrepreneur, and passionate advocate for science and technology education. Born on April 5, 1951, he is best known as the founder of FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), the global robotics organisation that inspires hundreds of thousands of students every year. Kamen created FIRST in 1989 with a simple mission: to use the excitement of robotics competitions to make STEM as engaging for students as sports or entertainment.
A lifelong inventor, Kamen holds hundreds of patents and is responsible for major innovations such as the Segway Personal Transporter, the iBOT mobility device, and pioneering medical technologies, including insulin pumps, portable dialysis systems, and advanced prosthetics. He founded DEKA Research & Development, the engineering company behind many of these breakthroughs.
Kamen has received numerous honours, including the National Medal of Technology, induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame, and recognition from scientific and educational institutions worldwide. Beyond inventions, his greatest impact is the global community of students, mentors, and educators he has inspired through FIRST—encouraging young people to become innovators, problem-solvers, and leaders.
