Learning from Excellence: How a Presidential Award–Winning Engineer Elevated Our Design 

Some moments leave a lasting mark on a team—not because of what was built that day, but because of how thinking itself evolved. One such defining experience for us was the opportunity to learn from a Presidential Award–winning engineer and former Boeing professional, whose career in aerospace engineering brought a new level of perspective to our work.

During this interaction, we gained deep insights into precision engineering and advanced mechanical systems—concepts that are foundational in high-stakes industries like aerospace, where accuracy, reliability, and safety are non-negotiable. Through real-world examples and detailed explanations, we learned how small design choices can have significant consequences, and why engineering excellence lies in attention to detail.

The session challenged us to rethink how we approach robot design. We discussed tolerance, load paths, material selection, and failure analysis, and how these principles directly translate to building more robust and efficient FTC robots. These lessons didn’t stay theoretical; they immediately influenced our design process, helping us refine mechanisms for better alignment, smoother motion, and improved durability.

Beyond technical knowledge, the experience was deeply inspiring. Hearing firsthand how engineering principles are applied in real-world aerospace systems reinforced the importance of discipline, iteration, and accountability in every design decision we make. It reminded us that the skills we develop through FTC extend far beyond competition—they are the same skills that shape innovations in the real world.

We are incredibly grateful for the time, mentorship, and wisdom shared with us. Learning from someone who has operated at the highest levels of engineering excellence has not only strengthened our robot—it has strengthened our mindset.

Moments like these define what FIRST is truly about: connecting students with mentors who transform curiosity into capability and passion into precision.
